What is FIRST?
FIRST, or For Inspiration & Recognition of Science & Technology, is an organization of multiple programs that promotes scientific and technological pursuits globally. Founded in the late 80's in New Hampshire, First has grown to touch people across the world. The Founders
Founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, FIRST was his attempt to make an impact on the world. Dean was an inventor, an entrepreneur, and tech enthusiast. Dean Kamen began working with the belated Woodie Flowers, a seasoned MIT professor in mechanical engineering, to bring about FRC. Woodie Flowers became wide known for his raw love of learning and self improvement, spurring the creation of a "Woodie Flowers" award in FRC.

The Philosophy of "Gracious Professionalism"
FIRST is all about displaying technology in a positive and cooperative light; the term "Gracious Professionalism" embodies this. Gracious Professionalism is a life philosophy, pioneered by Woodie Flowers. It embodies striving to reach one's potential with integrity. Following this mentality, FIRST describes it's programs, not as competitions, but as "coopertitions". FIRST goes beyond robotics and into the heart of self fulfillment through philanthropy.
The Impact of FIRST
FIRST prepares its students for a future in STEM. With $80 million in scholarships, 96% of students expect a bachelors degree or higher. Additionally, the vast majority work or engage in STEM careers. The impact first has on its alumni also encourages a 43% return rate, as either mentors or volunteers. FIRST is also an opportunity to learn skills that aren't taught in the classroom; leadership, creative and innovative thinking, and problem solving.
